Project
Showcase: Mineta San José International Airport (SJC)
San José, CA
Coordination & Design:
Tom Esch Senior Civil
Engineer, SJC Planning & Development Division
Today's
modern airport has much to convey to its visitors---information that is
vital to efficient operation, passenger security and comfort. Our
airports need to post instructions, restrict access and announce
services and concessions. This information must be posted clearly in
prominent locations and is subject to change.
When Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) decided to improve the
appearance of its free-standing signs as part of an overall
comprehensive signage modernization project, the criteria were clear.
The airport needed movable kiosks that were updatable, attractive and
durable enough to perform in a busy, crowded environment. Tom Esch, a
Senior Civil Engineer and SEGD member (Society of Environmental Graphic
Design) at SJC spearheaded the project and wanted a consistent look and
overall improved appearance for the airport's signage program.
After a period of thorough testing by Mr. Esch and his team at
the airport, APCO's Arcadia Series 3200 kiosks were the perfect solution
for several locations with a need to provide on-the-spot information
yet with no available wall space. According to Mr. Esch, the system
"looks good and it is durable...and performed well during our testing
period."
The Arcadia stanchions at the airport are used to display
everything from TSA posters to promotions about new concessions and WiFi
service. One of the key advantages of the kiosks is that they can be
moved to where they are most needed at any given time, making Arcadia
the perfection solution for this busy international airport!
